Five reasons why you ought to be at the Beijing Olympics
George Wee, general manager of Shangri-La Hotel, Beijing, and his team are busy preparing for the biggest sporting event of the year. Don't miss it, he says.

  1. The city of Beijing is really shaping up for the Olympics, with the obvious being all the Olympics venues (Bird's Nest, Water Cube, etc.) which were completed earlier this year, and were being "tried and tested" in the past few months - each venue is an interesting architectural monument in its own right, and viewers will not be disappointed.

  2. Aside from the main Olympics venues, the city of Beijing is undergoing one of the most spectacular transformations in history. Streets are being widened; trees are being planted; colourful flower boxes along the street and parks extended; stunning office buildings are being erected; and new flagship stores from world-class designers are offering glamorous shopping. Beijing has become a bustling metropolis which has achieved a balance of the old and new, the traditional and the modern, with stunning historical relics alongside some of the most ambitious architectural projects in the modern world, such as the gravity-defying CCTV tower and the National Centre for Performing Arts, aka The Egg.

Despite the modernisation, historical sites have not been overlooked. The Forbidden City has reaped the benefits of a massive renovation, alongside ongoing facelifts at the Temple of Heaven and Great Wall. Beijing's historic hutong (old alleyways) are thriving under a multitude of restoration projects, and many of the city's oldest districts, including Qianmen, are being revived.

  3. China and Beijing have been preparing and gearing up to the 2008 Olympics for the past few years and visitors to the Games should be able to experience the proud, yet genuine and warm hospitality from the people of Beijing.

  4. The "wine & dining" and entertainment scene in Beijing is also thriving, with new independent bars and restaurants and eateries opening by the day, from international cuisine to Chinese regional delights to casual but interesting cafes and eateries. There is an abundance of choices.

  5. Finally, the Olympics Games itself, with amazing athletes training their whole lives for one incredible moment of winning a medal, fulfilling that ultimate dream. The Beijing Olympics promises to be a new "best" in the history of the Olympics, with high expectations for spectacular Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

Note: By the way, only for Golden Circle members - if you need rooms during the Olympics period, Shangri-La Hotel, Beijing, still has few rooms available for last-minute bookers.

Fairytale setting
"My fairytale trip still has one highlight for me: Shangri-La's Barr Al Jissah Resort and Spa is located in a crescent-shaped bay with turquoise sea with soft waves. Sand coloured rocks, glimmering golden in the light of the sunset, are located - like guards made of stone - on each side of this huge resort. The guests share the beach only with the turtles, which have been on their own here since ten years ago. Such a private bay is really something special. Shangri-La's Barr Al Jissah Resort and Spa is an enchanting resort in Oman."
